Vocational Rehabilitation
Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services helps individuals with disabilities prepare for, find, keep, and advance in employment. A VR counselor is available in each county to help individuals identify their career goals and connect with services and resources.
Eligibility for Vocational Rehabilitation Services is not based on income or financial resources.
How Vocational Rehabilitation Can Help
VR Services may assist individuals with:
- Exploring career interests, strengths, and skills
- Finding a first job
- Receiving assistive technology or other supports needed to maintain employment
- Returning to work after a period of unemployment
- Training for a new career when disability-related needs affect employment
- Advancing in an existing career
The Vocational Rehabilitation Process
1. Referral or Application
Individuals can refer themselves for VR services. A referral can also be made by a family member, physician, medical provider, school, educational institution, or another person supporting the individual.
Individuals can contact or visit their local VR office to begin the process. An online application is also available.
2. Eligibility Determination
After an application is submitted, a VR counselor will contact the individual to gather information about their medical history, education, work experience, vocational interests, and other factors related to employment.
An individual may be eligible for VR services when:
- They have a physical or mental impairment;
- The impairment creates a significant barrier to employment; and
- They need vocational rehabilitation services to prepare for, obtain, participate in, or maintain employment that matches their abilities, strengths, career interests, and informed choices.
VR generally makes an eligibility determination within 60 days of receiving the application. In some situations, additional time may be allowed when further evaluation or circumstances outside the agency’s control require an extension.
